Pigface Flower Essences
It is hard to explain why this plant is called Pigface. A possibility could be the colour of some blossoms, which are the colour of young piglets. However, Pigface flowers also come in white or yellow and many crossbred species have very intense colours. Pigface grows on sandy ground, even in pure beach sand where nothing else can grow. Neither the intense Australian sun nor the drying salinity of the wind on shores can disturb the beauty of Pigface. In fact, extremes of environment and climate seem to intensify the beauty and colour of this open-faced flower even more.
Pigface is a ground covering plant that spreads over large areas through its runners. The leaves are "fleshy", filled with a jelly like liquid similar to Aloe Vera. The predominantly purple blossoms have an orange-yellow centre. The edible red fruits are two to three cm long and taste salty-sweet.
