Many Australians believe that this pretty, deciduous tree is an Australian native. But it is really a native of the dry, high deserts of Brazil and is also called “Brazilian Rosewood”. The tree grows up to 30 metres high and spreads to about the same diameter. The lilac trumpet-like flowers hang in large clumps from the grey branches. The flowers give the best displays in dry years. Too much rain encourages leaves to appear first, thus marring the startlingly colourful exhibition of flowers. Standing under a flowering Jacaranda tree feels wonderful. It makes one almost dizzy to look though the lilac blue flowers at the blue of the sky. The flowers seem to have a relaxing, cooling, calming effect.
